To understand what values are important to our community, we have been experimenting with our Bozeman Happiness Survey. We began by setting up an interactive bar chart at Wild Joe's Coffee Spot on Main Street and asking patrons to place up to a dozen colored stickers on a chart - next to the things that give them the most happiness, whether they actually use them or not. So far, wilderness and wild animals have scored the highest. The chart presents a rough continuum from Wild Nature to Urban Civilization with many categories along the way. When the stickers are all used up we will take the chart down and count the points to get a rough comparison of what matters most to us. We can also place the chart up in other places to sample a different subculture of Bozeman. In Wild Joes's for example, music and coffee shops have scored high as well.
